ΠΡΟΛΟΓΟΣ

The Historical Dictionary of the Cappadocian Dialects (Ιστορικό Λεξικό των Ιδιωμάτων της Καππαδοκίας) -ILIK is the product of a research project co-funded by the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (G.S.R.I.) and the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.), and was implemented from 2018 until 2022, hosted by the Laboratory for Modern Greek Dialects of the University of Patras, with the collaboration of the Research Centre for Modern Greek Dialects of the Academy of Athens (project πρόγραμμα Digitizing the Cappadocian Dialectal Landscape – DiCaDLand, http://cappadocian.upatras.gr/el).

The aim of the ILIK is to provide the fullest possible lexicographic documentation of the Cappadocian dialect, as part of the series of the major dialectal lexica published by the Academy of Athens, namely the Historical Dictionary of the Dialects of South Italy (Karanastasis 1984-1992), the Dictionary of the Tsakonian Dialect (Kostakis 1986-1987) and of course the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek, both of the Standard Language and the Dialects (ILNE, 1933-). The ILIK is accompanied by the Linguistic Atlas of the dialectal varieties of Cappadocia in print form by the Academy of Athens and in electronic form by the University of Patras.

The initial idea, the design, the overall planning and overseeing and the chief editorship of the Dictionary were the responsibility of Io Manolessou, Director of the Research Centre for Modern Greek dialects of the Academy of Athens. Georgia Katsouda contributed the overall review and revision of the etymological part of all the entries, and Simeon Tsolakidis undertook the enrichment of the Dictionary through the excerpting of the old and valuable Cappadocian manuscripts of the Center’s Archive and of the Archive of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies, as well as through the compilation of the morphological entries (suffixes), and the incorporation of corrections. The contribution of G. Chairetakis, who also participated in the excerption of the Centre of Asia Minor Manuscripts and was in charge of the compilation of the bibliography and the digitization of written sources (scanning, OCR conversion) was also significant. Ch. Papanagiotou contributed to the compilation of a significant number of entries. Maria Deliyanni, PhD, philologist on secondment from Secondary Education, had the responsibility for the copy editing of the Dictionary. The contribution of A. Karasimos, who was responsible for the construction, operation and continuous updating of the electronic Dictionary Writing System and the electronic text corpus of the Dictionary, and of Dimitra Melissaropoulou, who, as the Principal Investigator of the Dicadland project, had an overall supervision of the methodological decisions and the progress of the project, was decisive. Researchers Konstantinos Kakarikos and Dionysios Mertyris participated at the proofreading stage, together with Alexandra Sgouraki and Maria Rautopoulou, philologistis on secondment from Secondary Education. The entries compiled by contributor are listed (in alphabetical order) in the section "Contributors".

The online version of the ILIK was implemented by Vassilis Poulopoulos, Associate Professor of the Department of Digital Systems of the University of the Peloponnese, with funding from the internal Public Investment Programme project of the Academy of Athens “Promotion of the research activity of the Research Centre for Modern Greek Dialects through the development of a digital lexicographic platform (code 200/1035, 2024-2025)”. This work was funded by the Sectoral Development Program (ΟΠΣ 5223471) of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, through the National Development Program (NDP) 2021-25.

Deepest thanks are due to the Centre for Asia Minor Studies for facilitating the study of the valuable manuscripts of its Archive, the hitherto unknown linguistic data of which radically changed the form of the Dictionary, and for allowing unhindered access to its rich library. Thanks are also due to:
- Petros Karatsareas, Metin Bağrıaçık and Mark Janse, who granted to the DiCaDLand project permission to use the recorded oral material from their personal fieldwork.
- Angela Ralli, who, as Director of the Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects of the University of Patras, gave access to the Laboratory's archive and permission to use the material of the research projects AMIGRE (2012-2015) and MORILAN (2012-2015), and who, as a consultant of the DiCaDLand project, contributed in its implementation.

The contribution of the National Printing Press, and especially of G. Pergantinas and I. Tsangaraki, for the faultless realization of the printed version of the ILIK, was of major importance, while the collaboration of the Financial Department of the University of Patras for the smooth running of the administrative-financial aspects of the project is fully appreciated.

Finally, a major debt of gratitude is owed to the then Supervisor of the Research Centre for Modern Greek Dialects and President of the Academy of Athens, Academician Antonios Rengakos, and to the Center’s Supervisory Board, who gave permission for the collaboration of the Centre to the Dicadland project and who facilitated it in every way, but primarily to the Αuthorities and the Senate of the Academy of Athens who accepted the inclusion of the ILIK in the series of the publications of the Institution.
